Intermodal Core Strengths

Markets and Network

CSXT Intermodal serves more major eastern U.S. markets (66% of the U.S. population) than any other rail carrier. In addition, CSXT Intermodal offers daily interchanges at major gateways to all major North American railroads including:

  • Burlington Northern Santa Fe
  • Canadian National
  • Canadian Pacific
  • Florida East Coast
  • Kansas City Southern
  • Union Pacific
CSX Intermodal Terminals, Inc. operates more than 30 intermodal terminals with nearly 450 scheduled and dedicated intermodal trains per week and has one of the most comprehensive double stack networks in the United States.

CSXT Intermodal remains committed to providing customers with safe, reliable and efficient intermodal service.

Investing for Growth

As the ports prepare for growth, CSX is mobilizing to capture that growth and collaborating with major east coast ports to either establish or aggressively expand on-dock and near-dock rail service to enhance the range of destinations offered to its customers.

Business Investments and Infrastructure Improvements

CSX has invested billions of dollars in infrastructure improvements. These investments will improve and add track, equipment, technology and facilities to help meet customer needs and the expected increase in demand for U.S. freight transportation.

Improvements include: double tracking main line segments, extending sidings and double-stack clearance projects. In addition, CSX alone is spending $60 million to $80 million each year over the next few years on terminal improvements, expansions and new terminals.

Recent Key Strategic Projects

  • Radio Frequency (technology): CSX Intermodal Terminals, Inc. has implemented a wireless work order system using Radio Frequency (RF) technology at key intermodal terminals. This technology provides real-time status, location updates on inventories, all equipment on the intermodal terminal, as well as associations/disassociations between containers and chassis. This technology also monitors location and tracks the movement of hazardous loads on the intermodal terminal. RF technology has improved driver dwell time on the intermodal terminal by 18% compared to the prior year. The increased productivity will reduce customer drayage costs, increase the number of driver turns per day and increase intermodal terminal safety.

  • North Baltimore, Ohio: A new terminal is being built within our network in Northwest Ohio. This intermodal terminal will raise the bar for all intermodal networks and will significantly improve service levels for intermodal customers in the Eastern U.S. The facility will allow intermodal trains to bypass Chicago, and the congestion in and around Chicago, and move through for processing to final destination without delay. By having the ability to locate at a single, cost-effective location with access to every major market in the country, new service offerings will be available due to "hub density" and this strategy will significantly improve routing efficiency. The Northwest Ohio capabilities will enable CSX Intermodal Terminals, Inc. to increase terminal throughput, add service lanes, connect to more markets and provide superior service overall.
