Communities
CSXT Intermodal has a proud history of providing sustainable transportation solutions for the communities we operate in - sustainable environmentally, socially and economically.
Environmental Commitment
With almost 200 years of technological innovation, rail remains one of the most environmentally friendly ways to move the freight that America demands. Steel wheels on steel rail provide a small coefficient of friction resulting in low energy needs per mile. Rail is three to four times more efficient than moving the same tonnage of freight via truck. This results in a reduced need for foreign oil, reduced particulate emissions and reduced environmental impact.
Thanks to operational advances, in many areas, intermodal can stack containers, resulting in a single train that hauls twice the capacity. This further reduces highway congestion and capitalizes on the efficiencies of rail. CSX locomotives continue to stay on the cutting edge of technological change. By using technology, like the wireless work order system, fuel consumption is reduced due to decreased search time on the terminal With the use of five wide span cranes at the new Northwest Ohio facility, environmental efficiencies are abound. These almost silent, ultra-efficient cranes will reduce energy consumption, improve efficiency and significantly reduce emissions. When transferring cargo containers between trains and trucks, the cranes will use electric motors to reduce emissions and will store the energy from crane, trolley and hoist decelerations.
