Hazardous Materials
Overview
CSXT Intermodal takes shipping hazardous materials seriously, working with the utmost care not to endanger our neighbors, employees, contractors, or our environment. To ensure the safest handling of hazardous commodities, there are mandated requirements. Before Shipping Hazardous Materials
Customers must have written approval from CSXT Intermodal's HazMat Department for hazardous materials. To see what groups of commodities have already been approved, please see the HazMat Evaluation Table. If the product is not on the list, please fill in the HazMat Evaluation Form
All hazardous materials shipments must be loaded and described in compliance with the Association of American Railroads' (AAR) Intermodal Loading Guide and the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations.
Shipments must be properly placarded, marked, blocked and braced for rail transportation.
ISO Tanks must be properly marked and meet AAR flatcar loading requirements.
All hazardous materials shipments must have complete and correct documentation per the requirements shown in 49 CFR or BOE 6000.
CSXT Intermodal rail billing must be in place before unit is accepted at the in-gate facility. Please note that HazMat billing is also required in keeping with Section 6.12 of Service Directory 1 and the current Hazardous Materials Surcharge will apply.
Hazardous Waste Shipping
In many cases, hazardous wastes pose a lower immediate risk to safety than do hazardous commodities. They do, though, have especially stringent evaluation and manifest requirements. We are prepared to work with you to move these materials quickly and safely toward their disposal destinations.CSXT Intermodal's paperwork procedures for hazardous wastes vary slightly from those used by trucking companies. Our initial evaluation process is the same as we follow for hazardous materials. The difference is at the shipment manifest terminal. We will sign the shipment manifest, make two copies, and return the document to your destination driver. If the destination is an intermodal terminal location, we will not allow the shipment off of our terminal without being able to sign the original document that contains the prior pick-up driver's signature thereby releasing it to the new driver.
For additional information, please refer to Service Directory 1 or contact the Hazardous Materials department.
Intermodal Placarding Requirement for Hazardous Container Loads
Although the American Association of Railroads requires that placards be placed at least four (4) feet above the bottom rail of a container, CSXT Intermodal has adopted its own policy to increase safety when shipping hazardous materials.CSXT Intermodal requires that placards be placed not less than five (5) feet from the bottom rail of a container. This requirement improves visibility of placards when units are placed in the bottom well of a rail car. Please help us by informing your shippers to comply with our requirement when placarding their shipments.
